Golf Books #261 (Golf My Own Damn Way: A Real Guy’s Guide to Chopping Ten Strokes Off Your Score)

Dec 27th

If you know anything at all about John Daly—and if you don’t, what in the hell are you doing with this book in your hands?—you know he approaches the game of golf from an, uh, slightly different perspective than your average two-time major winner.

How different? Well, for starters, Long John thinks the PGA Tour ought to permit Bermuda shorts, make carts mandatory, let him wear his hair down to his butt if he wants to, and strip-search tournament patrons at the entrance gate to keep cameras and cell phones off the course.

In Golf My Own Damn Way, you’ll take a virtual ride on Big John’s magic bus as he tells you the best way to grip it so you can rip it. Looking for a sure cure to bunkerphobia? It’s here. A one-hour golf lesson that’s 100 percent guaranteed to make you a better golfer? Ditto. Want to know why you should occasionally leave your big dog in your trunk, how to watch your weight, and what golf and sex have in common? You came to the right book.

And while he’s busy explaining all these and many other things, Daly also tells you why you should keep your head out of the game, let your belly lead your hands, listen to your right foot, check your ball position—and buy a hybrid (the club, not the car).

Following in the spike prints of his 2006 bestselling autobiography, My Life In and Out of the Rough, Golf My Own Damn Way is an off-the-wall and intensely personal yet imminently practical and accessible tip sheet on how to cut ten strokes off your score—now.

Two things are certain: you’ve never seen a golf instructional book quite like this one, and you’ll never need another one.

Krakow Valley Golf Course, Poland

Dec 26th

By the turn of the millennium, only a handful of golf courses existed in Poland. However since then over a dozen new courses have sprung up all over the country. Krakow Valley Golf & Country Club is home to one of the very best of these new designs, a golf complex covering an area of 160 hectares, has been created in last years in Paczółtowice, a small village between Kraków and Katowice. It was designed by Ronald Fream, an American from California who started his career in 1966 in the team of legendary Robert Trent Jones.

Laid out over a forested, undulating landscape this championship golf course (par 72) aims to satisfy every player’s requirements. Diversified tee distances which welcome both beginners and advanced players, wide rolling fairways and massive bunkers around the greens with high, challenging faces – all these elements combine with a typical Polish landscape to allow the whole complex to aspire to a place among the top European golf courses.

Krakow Valley was proud host to the European Seniors Tour, venue for the 2008 Polish Seniors Championship. Ian Woosnam emerged victorious, claiming his first European Seniors Tour title.

Costa Navarino – The Dunes Course, Greece

Dec 19th

Located at Costa Navarino in Messinia, southwest Peloponnese in Greece; the impressive Costa Navarino Dunes Course stretches across a breathtaking beachfront landscape. This 18-hole, par-72 course measures almost 6200 meters from the back tees and a little more than 5000 meters from the front tees. Designed by two-time Masters champion and Ryder Cup captain Bernhard Langer in partnership with European Golf Design. This new course has caught headlines in recent months as many point to the significance of a course of this magnitude in Greece.

This championship course, set in a landscape of diverse topography with spectacular sea and river views, incorporates some links-style features in areas closest to the sea, with tall dunes dividing some of the holes adjacent to the golden beach. Parts of the course venture into olive and fruit groves, while some holes run along a small river that meanders through the site. Combined with large undulating greens, wide fairways and steep-faced pot bunkers, the links element of the course adds to its unique style and playability.
