Golf Books #240 (Muni: The History of the Ocala Golf Club)

Jun 28th

71geLtdm5-LAlong a busy stretch of Silver Springs Boulevard in the heart of Ocala, Florida, lies a golf course whose rich history is only matched by its unique charm. The Ocala Golf Club has been a part of the city’s fabric for nearly eighty-five years.

However, golf’s origins in Ocala reach back even further to a time when the game was brought to America by a band of Scottish professionals and spread throughout Florida thanks to the deep pockets of the railroads.

Muni: The History of the Ocala Golf Club explores this early history, as well as the people, rounds, and stories that helped shape the fairways and greens of this beloved course.

About the Author – D.J. Jones grew up on the fairways of Ocala Golf Club and remains a devout “Muni Rat” to this day. His love of golf came practically at birth, as a fourth-generation golfer descending from not one, but two, career club professionals.
A passion for the game and its early origins eventually led him on a yearlong quest to unearth the history of the course he is proud to call home. D.J. currently resides in Ocala with his wife Megan, and can often be found strolling Muni’s fairways with his walker bag and a handful of clubs in tow.

Old Padeswood Golf Club, Wales

Jun 27th

Old Padeswood is situated in the picturesque Alyn Valley of Flintshire and was founded in 1977 following the transfer of Padeswood & Buckley to new premises nearby. The Club retained the land upon which the original course was laid in 1909. Its’ potential as a golf course was recognised by a passing professional, the late Arthur Joseph, whilst eating his packed lunch at the roadside.

Following consultations with the landowner, he decided to settle down in the area and proceeded to lay out the 9 hole meadow land golf course with the only implements available to him – a pick, shovel, rake, fork and wheelbarrow. But wait, there’s more…

Odyssey has announced the launch of its limited edition Milled Collection RSX Putters, which are pushing sound and feel dynamics to new levels.

Odyssey has pioneered the use of insert technology in putters for over twenty-five years, and through its exhaustive work has continually explored ways in which sound and feel can be optimised to enhance putter performance and build player confidence.

Austie Rollinson, Principal Designer at Odyssey Golf, explains: “Staff Professional, Phil Mickelson, has always told us that when he hits a five-foot putt, he wants it to look, feel and sound like a five-foot putt.” But wait, there’s more…

Golf Books #239 (Golf Performance Training: What They Won’t Tell You)

Jun 21st

51f-szZFTNLIf you’ve been golfing for any stretch of time, you’ve probably been exposed to the myth that movement-based functional training and sport-specific exercise can make you a better golfer.

Gary Bannister reveals a proven muscle-based alternative that gets better results: proper strength training.

A longtime golfer, Bannister has played with some of the world’s greatest champions. He established and coached the men’s and women’s varsity golf teams at Averett College, and opened South America’s first Nautilus gym, which led him to prepare Venezuela’s male and female golf teams for the World Team Amateur Championship in 1986.

Bannister advises golfers to build the muscles involved in golf in the most efficient and effective way you can without trying to be specific. That means without trying to duplicate the actions of the golf swing. Only after you’ve done that should you focus on learning to use that strength to your advantage on the golf course.

Filled with golfing anecdotes, rich history, and exercises that will keep you fit, you’ll be amazed by how much your game improves through Golf Performance Training.

Seapoint Golf Club, Ireland

Jun 20th

Seapoint Golf Club is a magnificent golflinks designed by Irish professional Des Smyth. Located to the east of Drogheda on the Irish Sea coast near the wonderfully named Termonfeckin, Seapoint is a testing links challenge of noteworthy design.

To the eastern end of the course a stream and its lakes complement the natural rolling dunes that separate the fairways throughout the course. At the western end, providing a thrilling climax to the round on the final three holes, the shoreline provides an OOB line to the right.

The course begins in the eastern section of the 260-acre site and features water hazards on 6 of the first nine holes. A stream guards the front of te first two greens, the first a par-4 that requires an accurate tee-shot and the 2nd a par-3 that has a deceiving, sloping green. But wait, there’s more…
