Golf Books #215 (Love at First Slice)

Dec 29th

51ca5hhiURLFor club golfers: a golf book with a sense of humor. Are you obsessed with your handicap? Phil Hunter is. But that won’t stop him being ejected from his beloved golf club unless he improves soon. During a key competition the sports journalist tragically causes the death of his boss, Sir Laurence Burnham. Tortured by guilt, Phil is forced to confront his demons.

He embarks on a journey of self improvement to become the best golfer he can be and win the forgiveness of Burnham’s beautiful widow, Caroline. But all is not as it seems at the exclusive club and Phil becomes trapped in a web of deceit and blackmail at the hands of his tormentor, embittered former detective Ted Moss.

As Hunter becomes the hunted, he must find a way to overcome the dark forces threatening to destroy him and his club. Can he make the recovery shot of his life or will he end up in the rough?

This is a humorous look at golf from the eyes of an amateur desperate to escape the lows of mediocre golf and a constantly ruined card. Set against the backdrop of an English golf club it explores the vital issues of a club golfer; handicaps, gadgets, club life. As the story unfolds it asks how can a man fall back in love with a game that’s led him to rock bottom. But wait, there’s more…

Waterville Golf Links, Ireland

Dec 28th

Waterville’s links originated in 1889 with nine holes. Then called the Waterville Athletic Club, the course was operated by the Commercial Cable Company. Over the next 50 years, the membership fluctuated with the demand for cable communication. When the company folded in the 1950s, so too did the club.

Waterville Golf Links

The links lay dormant until an Irish-born American, John A. Mulcahy, purchased the property in 1968 and set about resurrecting the course. Mulcahy hired Ireland’s foremost links architect, Eddie Hackett. Hackett was later joined in the endeavor by Mulcahy himself and none other than Mulcahy’s close friend, Claude Harmon, by then the head professional at Winged Foot Golf Club.

In 1987, Mulcahy sold the course to a group of Irish Americans. Shortly after, Waterville gained acceptance as one of Ireland’s best links courses, most notably, by touring pros. Among these were U.S. Open champion Payne Stewart and friends like Ernie Els, Jim Furyk, Mark O’Meara and Tiger Woods. O’ Meara, Stewart and Woods – along with Stuart Appleby, David Duval and Lee Janzen – all became members of Waterville.  But wait, there’s more…

51kaLbyypNL…Design Philosophies, Creative Insights and Playing Tips to Improve Your Score from the World’s Most Challenging Golf Course Architect

Packed with inside information about how World Golf Hall of Famer Pete Dye hoodwinks golfers of all skill levels, Bury Me In A Pot Bunker presents valuable tips to strategically play Dye’s courses and any courses through understanding the architect’s bedeviling mindset.

Also included are Pete’s design philosophies as well as humorous “Dye-isms” chronicling Dye’s remarkable career. “Most Pete Dye courses are mental challenges more than physical.” – Rory Mcllroy “The way Pete gets on a property and feels it is pretty impressive. His courses built for tournaments are hard, but there’s a good reason behind everything. We’ve talked for hours.

To get his opinion has been invaluable.” – Tiger Woods “No other [golf course] designer continues to re-invent his architecture the way Pete Dye does.” – Ron Whitten -Golf Digest “Pete Dye – the most loved, hated, and imitated golf-course architect of the past fifty years.” – PGA Magazine “[Pete Dye’s] self-effacing, aw-shucks approach to the game belies an artistry that reached into golf’s past and made it relevant for the future. Muirfield Village Golf Club, USA

Dec 21st

The 18-hole Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio is a private golf course that opened in 1974. Designed by Jack Nicklaus, Muirfield Village Golf Club measures 7392 yards from the longest tees and has a slope rating of 153 and a 76.9 USGA rating. The course features 5 sets of tees for different skill levels. The greens are bent grass and the fairways are bent grass.

Muirfield in Scotland is the course of “The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers”, the world’s oldest golf club. It’s an architectural masterpiece and a layout that Jack Nicklaus thoroughly admires. His admiration turned into a love affair when he won the 1966 British Open at Muirfield and he decided to realise his dream by designing and naming his home-town course after the historic British Open venue.

“I set out to build not only an outstanding golf course for every level of player, but a magnificent course for watching a tournament… I thought the Masters was a great thing for golf and that I’d like to do the same thing in Columbus.” Commented Jack. Muirfield Village Golf Club officially opened for play on Memorial Day (27th May 1974) with an exhibition match between big Jack and Tom Weiskopf. Needless to say Jack won with an impressive six-under par 66, a course record that stood until 1979. But wait, there’s more…
